One look at the Lego Joker and his costume, and you'd forget whatever that thing in Suicide Squad was. As much as I love Burton's films and his Goth aesthetic when it comes to the costumes and the world in general (seriously, dude put the Goth in Gotham), or as much as I appreciate the realism Nolan's world and Batman costume brought, (and not to forget, the Snyder-ness of Ben Affleck's costume and world), they are simply no match for the manic, over the top nature of the costumes and the world that Lego brings. Thankfully, The Lego Batman Movie takes all of that and cranks it up to 11. Disney's buttery smooth animation might be a thing of beauty, but what Warner Animation Group achieved with The Lego Movie, making an entirely CGed film look like it was done using stop motion, was truly remarkable.Īnd coupled with the bright and vivid colors and character designs, you had the perfect base for toys, costumes and accessories. I will never cease to be amazed at how far modern animation has come. It's not possible to ever love this Joker enough. Once you've got that image into the potential audience's heads, your appeal is sealed. To be fair to The Lego Movie, it had this boffo idea first, and with how successful it proved, and how popular its version of Batman proved (seriously, in the pre-Batfleck era, the Lego Batman costume sold almost as well as the Michael Keaton Batman costume, and way ahead of the Adam West Batman costume), it was a guarantee that The Lego Batman Movie would be a decent entertainer if nothing more, and once the trailers and clips started pouring in, people were assured this spin-off didn't exist just to sell more toys and costumes, but because the people connected with it genuinely wanted to make this movie. What do you get when you combine a dark and brooding costumed vigilante with connectable mini blocks?Įxactly, instant appeal right there, boom. With how popular Legos have been throughout history, it's safe to assume everyone has come in contact with them at some point in their life.Īnd with how popular Batman has proven in pop culture, it's even safer to assume you've seen and loved at least one, if not all, of his iterations. The reasons are simpler to list than they'd seem.īatman's entire life under the scanner through a Lego lens? Yep, count me in. Is it just the costumes? The appeal? Or something else entirely? Going by the box office numbers, critical acclaim and word of mouth, I'm gonna assume you've seen The Lego Batman Movie already (and if you haven't, you should rush to a theater immediately), so you're probably already readying your wallet to get those sweet, sweet Lego costumes for yourself and everyone you know of, and that begs the question, what is it about the film that's causing people to go ga-ga over it? The Lego Batman Movie is a triumph if there ever was. I know what you're thinking: How can a puny 1.5 inch plastic Batman take on a 6 foot 4 Batman (or one of the more reasonably sized non-Affleck Batmen) and win, even if in the costume department?

To save you from the suspense the titular question has stirred up, let me start our discussion with the answer: yes, I do firmly believe the Lego Batman costume will be the Batman costume to beat this year.
